THE EVENT

The Green Jewel 100K and 50K Fun Runs are new running events that showcase the Cleveland Metroparks. Running from the Scenic Park (near the Marina) in Rocky River to the Forest Picnic Area in North Chagrin Reservation (near the Nature Center) in Willoughby Hills, participants will travel 100K across the Emerald Necklace. (Those choosing the 50K event will finish at the Oak Grove Picnic Area in Brecksville.)

The Green Jewel runs are part of the 2008 Western Reserve Trail Running Series.

Additional information is available on the Vertical Runner Bulletin Board.

THE COURSE

Runners start the race at the Scenic Park Picnic Area in the Cleveland Metroparks in Rocky River, Ohio.

Exiting the drive, runners will follow the All-Purpose Trail south and east all the way to the Station Rd. Parking Lot (~33 miles) in Brecksville (except for a five mile stretch between Ridge Rd. and Brecksville Rd./US 21 where the course is on the roadway). 50K runners will stop at the Oak Grove Picnic Area in Brecksville.

From Station Rd, runners will travel north on the Towpath Trail to Frazee House where runners will proceed on Sagamore Rd. to the Summit Metroparks Hike and Bike Trail. At the end of the Hike and Bike Trail, runners will cross Alexander Rd. and proceed on the All Purpose Trail following the course markings all the way to River Rd. in Solon. From there, runners will head north on River Rd. to Wilson Mills Rd. and follow park roads to the finish at the Forest Picnic Area in the North Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks.

Note: the majority of the course is on All Purpose Trail (asphalt). Other parts of the course are on crushed gravel and others are on road (asphalt or concrete). There are no dirt trails on the course. Bottom line: the course is pretty flat and fast.

THE AID

The runs will feature aid stations approximately every 10 miles. (Additional stations with water-only will be available as well.) See the final map for exact locations.

Note to crew members: because the run takes place in suburbia, amenities are not far away.

THE RULES

This is a fun run, so in the grand scheme of things, the finishing time doesn't matter. Except for it to be official the finishing time must be less than 14 hours for the 100K and less than 7 hours for the 50K.

Runners who complete either of the runs within the time limit will gain the appropriate points (31 or 62) for the WRTR series. Note: finishing times will not be used in the series point calculations.

DO obey traffic rules and be careful. (There are several major road crossings on the course and traffic is not being stopped for the runners.)
DO carry a flashlight or use a headlamp for the early hours of the run.
DO carry a water bottle or two. It may be a couple hours between aid stations.
DO be nice to aid station volunteers.
DO prepare for various weather conditions. (We don't promise anything and we don't offer refunds.)
DO have a good time.

DO NOT cut the course.
DO NOT drop out without telling a race director or aid station worker. Otherwise we will be looking for you and you may be banned from future runs.
DO NOT poop in the woods. (There are plenty of outdoor bathroom facilities - approximately one every three miles.)

Optional
DO carry your cell phone.
DO carry a camera.

THE TRANSPORTATION

Parking is not permitted at either Scenic Park or at the Nature Center. Parking will be available at the Parkview Pool in Mayfield Village, approximately 1/2 mile from the Nature Center. Runners can park at the Finish be transported to the start at 4:00 AM for an additional $5 fee.

No transportation will be provided from Oak Grove (50K) or anywhere along the course to the Finish. You will need to arrange your own transportation.
